At Full Circle Farm, donkeys play an important role beyond their charming and affectionate nature. These intelligent and loyal animals serve as protectors for our goats and other livestock while also being delightful companions. Donkeys have been used for centuries in farming, providing not just labor but also security, and they continue to be valuable members of our farm community.

Meet Donald and Georgia: Our Resident Donkeys

Our journey with donkeys began in 2018 when we welcomed Donald, our first donkey, to the farm. A male donkey, also called a ‘jack’, Donald quickly became an integral part of farm life. In 2020, we introduced Georgia, a beautiful female donkey, or ‘jenny,’ as a companion for Donald.

Together, these two have enriched our farm with their protective instincts and loving demeanor. Over the years, they have also blessed us with two wonderful donkey babies, known as colts, who have since found new homes on other local farms.

Why Do Farms Have Donkeys?

Donkeys are known for their strong protective nature, making them an excellent addition to farms that house smaller livestock. Their natural instinct to chase away predators keeps our goats and other animals safe from threats such as:

  • Coyotes
  • Bobcats
  • Unsupervised dogs
  • Even alligators in South Carolina!

Unlike horses, donkeys have a keen sense of awareness and bravery, making them fearless when faced with potential threats. They will vigorously defend their territory, ensuring the safety of the farm.

More Than Just Guardians

Beyond their role as protectors, donkeys are affectionate and intelligent animals. Donald and Georgia have quickly become farm favorites, interacting with visitors and forming strong bonds with our other animals. Their playful nature and gentle temperament make them wonderful companions for both humans and livestock alike.
